Carpenter Bees

Bees are one of those rare pests that do so much good for the surrounding world, yet most of us run from them in abject fear. This most likely has to do with their stingers. After all, if someone with allergies is stung by a bee, it could potentially be fatal. For most of us it isn't fatal, but it is uncomfortable. Unfortunately, here in Las Vegas, there is another species of bee that we need to worry about. It is the carpenter bee. Like other bees, carpenter bees can sting. However, they are capable of causing more harm because they build their nests inside of wood, damaging homes, and property in the process. Therefore, if you want to keep your Las Vegas home safe from these destructive bees, you need to know some effective preventative measures. Moreover, should carpenter bees invade your property, you need to know the treatment options you can count on to effectively remove them.

What Do Carpenter Bees Look Like?

Carpenter bees grow anywhere from ½ an inch to 1 ½ inch long. They have round, ovoid bodies that are predominantly black with metallic-black abdomens. Additionally, the males can have yellow markings on their abdomens. As such, many people mistake carpenter bees for bumblebees. However, bumblebees have a furry yellow abdomen that carpenter bees do not have. Despite their similarities in appearance, carpenter bees and bumblebees are quite different from each other. For instance, while bumblebees, and most bee species, live socially in colonies, carpenter bees are solitary insects that live by themselves. Instead of building colonies with other bees, carpenter bees burrow down into the wood to build their nests. Furthermore, females will burrow into wood to lay their eggs and protect their larvae.

Are Carpenter Bees Dangerous?

Carpenter bees can be dangerous to humans, especially those with bee allergies. While only female carpenter bees have stingers, they are mostly used for defensive purposes, and will sting if they feel threatened. If you have any allergies to bees, it is best to exercise caution around carpenter bees whether they are male or female just to be safe.

Carpenter Bee Prevention Tips

When it comes to carpenter bee prevention for your Las Vegas home, your primary objectives should be to remove anything from your property that might attract carpenter bees and to take steps to protect the wood around your property. In order to achieve these objectives, you should:

  • Remove any fallen trees, stumps, wood debris, or other decaying wood from around your property.
  • Limit the flowering plants around your property as they can attract carpenter bees.
  • Paint, varnish, or stain any wood around your home to deter carpenter bees from burrowing in it.
  • Install screens, weatherstripping, and door sweeps in and around windows and exterior doors.
