Here are 9 Tips to Control Cockroaches at Home

  1. Diatomaceous Earth
  2. Baking Soda
  3. Boric Acid
  4. Borax
  5. Citrus
  6. Essential Oils
  7. Set Bait Stations
  8. Use a Liquid Concentrate
  9. Caulk all Entry Points

Tip No. 1: Diatomaceous Earth

Also known as DE, Diatomaceous Earth is a natural cockroach repellent. Diatomaceous earth is a type of powder made from the sediment of fossilized algae found in bodies of water. Because the cells of these algae were high in a compound called silica, the dried sediment produced from these fossils are also very high in silica which is sharp and irritating to cockroaches.

Sprinkle DE in areas prone to cockroaches, and it will dehydrate and damage the exoskeleton of the roaches.

You can purchase food-grade DE from health food stores. It is safe for both kids and pets, so you don't have to worry about causing any harm.

Tip No. 2: Baking Soda

Baking soda is another easy and fast way to get rid of cockroaches. Moreover, you might already have it in your pantry.  It is a practical, non-toxic remedy, and it is also affordable.

To use it to get rid of cockroaches, sprinkle the baking soda and some diced onions near the roaches.

You can also place it in a small shallow dish where the cockroaches are prone. When they consume it, the natrual gasses cause problems with their digestive systems.

Tip No. 3: Boric Acid

This is a naturally occurring compound found mainly in plants and fruits as a mixture of water and boron.  It is harmless to pets and humans but lethal to cockroaches. When the cockroaches ingest the boric acid powder, they die instantly.

To get rid of cockroaches using boric acid, sprinkle some powder on a paper plate, then place some peanut butter or orange peel in the middle of the plate. You may then place the paper plate wherever you have seen cockroaches hovering.

Boric acid is effective, natural, and affordable and will give you results fast.

Tip No. 4: Borax

This is a laundry product that is readily available and kills cockroaches immediately.

To get results fast, mix some borax with sugar in a ratio of 1:1 and sprinkle the mixture where you see cockroaches often. When cockroaches ingest the borax, they become dehydrated, and die quickly.

Tip No 5: Citrus

This is a fantastic treat for humans but an enemy to cockroaches. The smell of lemon repels cockroaches.

Add some lemon oil to water in a spray bottle, then spray it to the cockroaches hiding spots. They will be repelled and avoid the area in the future.

Tip No. 6: Essential Oils

Most essential oils repel cockroaches, specifically peppermint and lemongrass.

To make a cockroach repellent, add some peppermint oil to water and spray it wherever you have seen cockroaches. They will die fast, and you will never see them again.

Tip No. 7: Set Bait Stations

This is one of the most proven ways to get rid of cockroaches. Bait stations can be set anywhere you have seen cockroaches crawling, but certianly any dark corners like your garage or pantry.

The smell of the bait will attract the cockroaches to eat the poison which kills them instantly.

However, care should be taken with bait stations. They contain poison and hence may be toxic to kids. Keep them away from kids and in an area where it will be difficult for kids (or pets) to get to them.

Tip No. 8: Use a Liquid Concentrate Pest Repellent

You can purchase liquid concentrate at your local improvement store, dilute it with water and spray it on the target cockroach hiding spots

Most concentrated Pest Repellents are non-toxic, but make sure you read the product label. Cockroaches walk on the product, then wipe it on their bodies, where it is absorbed into the nervous system, killing them.

Tip No. 9: Caulk All Entry Points

These tips effectively get rid of cockroaches, but they will not work if you have entry points for other cockroaches to get into your home.  The smallest hole or wall crack will allow entry for cockroaches.

For this reason, seal gaps and possible entry points using caulk while paying attention to gaps on window seals and doors.

Remember always to check the caulk and replace it because it wears out with time.
