What are snakes?

There are more than 3,000 species of snakes worldwide, and these reptiles are one of the most feared on the planet. However, in nature, snakes are incredibly beneficial by feeding on a variety of smaller animals, including rodents, and helping to control their populations.

The dry, hot desert climate in Las Vegas and throughout Southern Nevada allows these cold-blooded animals to thrive. Being cold-blooded means that their body temperature mimics the temperature outside. When the weather is warm, snakes are active, and when the weather is cold, they hibernate because they are unable to digest food. Some of the most common snakes in our area include:
Mojave Desert Sidewinders
Mojave Rattlesnakes
Southwestern Speckled Rattlesnakes
Night Stalkers
Corn Snakes
Diamondbacks

Are snakes dangerous?

Snakes do have the potential to be very dangerous to both people and our pets. Unfortunately, in the Las Vegas area, we have several species of venomous snakes that residents need to be aware of and always stay away from—the Mojave Desert sidewinder, the Mojave rattlesnake, the Southwestern speckled rattlesnake, and the diamondback.

Other species like the corn snake and night snake are less of a threat. Even though they will bite when defending themselves, their venom is not strong enough to cause health problems in people. Due to the large number of dangerous venomous snakes in our area, if you are bitten by a snake and you are unsure of its species, it’s a good idea to seek medical attention.

Another problem with having snakes on your property is the emotional toll it can take. Many people have a phobia of these slithering reptiles, and for good reason! Snakes hide out of sight, and people often come into contact with them accidentally. It can be very stressful knowing that snakes are on your property and not know when or where you may come across one.

If you have snakes living on your property, it is important to contact Red Rock Pest Control to have one of our professionals identify the species and safely remove the snakes. In addition to getting rid of them, our technicians can then put measures in place to help prevent their return!

Why do I have a snake problem?

Snakes are a significant problem for property owners in our area because they thrive in the hot weather of Las Vegas. If your yard provides snakes with a lot of places to hide and abundant sources of food, it will be more attractive to these reptiles.

Where will I find snakes?

When it comes to snakes, the truth is that they are typically shy and want to stay away from people and other animals as much as possible. To do this, they seek dark, secluded hiding spots. Common hiding spots for snakes include:
Tall grasses
Trees

Under overgrown shrubs and bushes
Under leaf piles
Under rock or woodpiles
Along fence lines, rock walls, or foundations
Along the edges of rivers, ponds, or lakes

You’ll often spot snakes during the middle of the day out in the open “sunning” themselves to increase their body temperature. If they become too warm, they will retreat to a shady location to cool down. Snakes are mainly outdoor pests but may find their way inside while searching for food or if the weather outside becomes too cool for their liking.
